Centre urges SC to derecognise 44-C grade deemed universities
1/19/2010

The Union Government today urged the Supreme Court to derecognise 44 C-category deemed universities functioning across the country.

In its affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has alleged that these deemed universities do not meet the eligibility criteria for getting the deemed university status.

Some of the deemed universities exist only on paper while some others were functioning without basic infrastructure such as a university campus and teaching staff.

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, in a recent statement, had raised doubts about the viability of these deemed universities and has backed the idea of derecognising those deemed universities which do not fulfill the eligibility criteria or were lacking in basic infrastructure.

The apex court will consider the affidavit filed by the Centre at the time of hearing.
