Delhi HC directs DUTA to resolve semester issue in student’s interest
7/28/2010
Delhi High Court has directed the Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA), whose members were not taking classes and were fighting the introduction of semester system, to resolve the issue ‘in the interest of the students’.
The court’s order came after both DUTA and the DU informed the court that they had not come to any conclusion on the issue as yet.
Justice Aruna Suresh directed the DUTA not to play with the ‘life and career’ of students and was sore at them for not taking classes.
Since the University and teachers union failed to reconcile their differences, the court suggested them to consult the students union whether they want the semester system or not.
‘Ask the students what they prefer, as they are the sufferer,’ the court said.
On July 15, the court had suggested both the parties to resolve the issue through mediation and appointed a lawyer as the mediator.
DUTA has been opposing the semester system for a long time but when the present Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental approved the new curricula for 12 science courses at the Academic Council meeting in May, they went on a strike and refused to take classes.
The University filed a petition in the court seeking a direction against the agitating teachers stating that this is affecting the career of the students.
The petitioners wanted DU to refrain from going on a strike and holding demonstrations repeatedly.
