4.7.2012 The Supreme Court today refused to interfere with Gujarat High Court order directing the Narendra Modi government to compensate and rebuild around 500 shrines which were destroyed during post Godhra riots in Gujarat.

A bench comprising Justices KS Radhakrishnan and Dipak Misra declined to stay the operation of February 8 order directing the Narendra Modi government to pay compensation and rebuild damaged religious structures belonging to the minority community within six months.

The High Court had issued the direction on the petition filed by the Gujarat Islamic Relief Committee claiming that more than 500 places of worship were damaged during 2002 Gujarat communal riots. UNI
