P&H HC: Sarabjit Singh's newly wed daughter gets police protection

The daughter of Indian prisoner in Pakistan jail Sarabjeet Singh, whose death sentence is a subject of struggle for the family, was today granted police protection by the Punjab and Haryana High Court here in view of apprehensions of threats to her life and liberty in the wake of her inter-caste marriage.
Swanpandeep Kaur, the daughter of Sarabjit Singh claiming to be 21 years old, had married Sanjay of Panchsheel Avenue, Jalandhar Cantonment on September 29, 2009 at Gurdwara Mata Sahib Kaur village Mansurwal Dona district Kapurthala according to Sikh religious rites.
Since childhood, she had been raised by her aunt Dalbir Kaur sister of Sarabjit Singh, who has been fighting to secure pardon and repatriation of her brother.
Due to the inter-caste angle, the girl’s parents- Dalbir and her husband Baldev Singh were reported to be unhappy.
It was in this context that Swapandeep Kaur apprehended trouble and possible threats to life and liberty.
She moved the high court and vacation bench of justice A.N.Jindal on October 1 had issued notices to the respondents including the state government.
During resumed hearing on the case, justice Rakesh Kumar Jain today directed the district police chief Tarn Taran to ensure that the life and liberty of Swapandeep Kaur and her husband is protected.
The directions were given to Tarn Taran police since the petitioner counsel Divjyot Singh Sandhu submitted that the parents of the girl live at Bhikhiwind in Tarn Taran district and a complaint could well be lodged there only.
