NHRC notice to home ministry on inhuman handling of Naxals bodies

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Union Home Ministry over ‘inhuman’ handling of bodies of Naxalites by the security forces.

The notice was issued after the Commission took suo motu cognizance of media reports depicting photographs of security personnel carrying the bodies of Naxalites, including women, with their hands and feet tied to bamboo poles, NHRC spokesperson Jaimini Kumar Srivastava said.

The report, published on the June 18, alleged that the photograph was taken following an anti-Naxal operation in West Midnapore district of West Bengal.

In its proceedings on the June 21, the NHRC observed that the report, if true, raised a ‘serious issue of violation of human rights of the victims.’ ‘A notice has been issued to the Ministry Secretary inviting factual report in the matter by the July 27,’ the spokesperson added.
